As proof that you don't need to travel to the far reaches of the globe to see some great marine life, today's This Is Why We Dive was captured in the Pacific Northwest.
Calvin Tang caught this shot of a bobtail squid at a dive site called Cove 2. I love the colors in the squid -- the way it looks reddish AND purple-ish at the same time is very cool. And those eyes -- so huge and curious-looking! Great shot, Calvin.

1. Well you are in fact correct. I am a PADI Assistant Instructor with a local dive shop here in Washington State, and the Puget Sound area. This area is rich and deverse in marine life.
The picture above is in fact, (according to "Welks to Whales" by : Rick M. Harbo, page # 122) a "Stubby Squid"
I am sure named for it's stubby little tenticals. Or if you prefer a scientfic name " Rossia pacifica" (Berry 1911)
And by the way, we see those little guys at this location all the time, not uncommon at all. This particualar location is a popular dive site, my shop does a lot of Open Water Classes at this location.
